Hi there! Welcome to the Cooperative Trust,
a community for young professionals in credit unions (& more!)
Young people are underrepresented in many levels of credit unions - not just in membership, but also in leadership and board rooms. Our industry won't survive without them, though!
In 2010, a group of tenacious young grasshoppers in credit unions decided to do something about it. Historically, credit union conferences lacked representation of young people - attendees were mostly homogenous groups of more experienced industry professionals. This group of young people literally "crashed" (showed up uninvited and unexpected) one of the biggest credit union conferences of the year: CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference.
What started out as a literal crash turned into an award-winning program that takes hundreds of young professional Crashers to countless conferences each year at a lower cost to them and with added content and opportunities just for YPs. Crashers report that the whole experience is career- and life-changing! Many who were unsure about staying in the industry go on to become CU executives and stay highly engaged in credit unions.
More than just crashes:
The high-energy in-person events are incredibly effective and inspiring. But what about when you get back home? The original Crashers formed a network to stay connected, and then decided to open it up to all credit union young professionals, not just Crashers. The Cooperative Trust Online Community today has more than 1700 members. It's an amazing place to connect, collaborate, and stay inspired as together we advocate for and build the future of our industry.
We're hard at work on two other awesome projects, too. Right now, there's a Guided Mentorship Program in the works to help connect young credit union professionals with industry leaders who can pass on their wisdom, and maybe learn a thing or two along the way themselves. We were also proud to announce our Young Adult Advisory Program for credit unions. This program by Filene Research Institute helps credit unions address and overcome challenges related to engaging the next generations in their membership, their talent, and their boardrooms.
The Cooperative Trust is brought to you by Filene Research Institute, and made possible thanks to Credit Union National Association and other generous sponsors.
